In groups of 4 we attempted to recreate Franck's work, basing the concept of our collages on our surroundings(locations around the school).

All aspects of the collage represent different items around the school and where you are stood while looking at it makes a significant difference as the mirror reflects different objects accordingly.
The bubble wrap represents the windows and the gold foil represents light. The grey felt embodies the carpet and the roll of white paper symbolises the column's along the corridor. |
“Roy Arden’s ‘Sweeper’ is a collage made from all of the remnants swept from the floor of his studio.
How does the experience differ? Which way of working do you prefer?” It is more difficult to make a collage from sweepings as you have to create a theme with the objects given to you, usually ones that you have not previously desired to use, because of this difficulty I prefer choosing my own pictures, however Roy Arden's method can inspire imagination. Herbert Bayer, 'Lonely Metropolitan', 1932what are the photographers intentions?
The photographer intended to show that he wasn't alone in feeling claustrophobic. He did this by using different hands and eyes to represent different people and he made the building fill the entire background to show claustrophobia. He wanted us to think that many people felt the same during that time What wider social, political or cultural issues was the photographer addressing? Herbert Bayer is considering surrealism (1922-1941) in this piece of work. This is shown by using realistic images in an unrealistic situation. The photographer wanted to explore the subconscious (e.g. Dreams) How do the materials and techniques used by the photographer contribute to the work and their intentions? The photographer has used gouache in creating his work to make shadows. This creates a dark, looming effect which helps support the photographers point about the increasingly repressive political situation. |

Mise en Scene: Theres a pair of hands with a different eye on each one building taking up the whole background. The whole picture is quite dark and shadowy Process / Technique: he collaged the picture using images that he took and some that he found. He coloured it in with different pigments and gouache to create a more realistic image. Lucas Simoes is an independent Brazilian artist. Born in Catanduva in 1980, he graduated in Architecture and Urbanism at PUC and Politecnico di Milano in 2003. He currently lives and works in São Paulo.
Lucas describes the process of his recent work: "The photograph series [quase-cinema] is from pictures I took from my everyday-life. For me some of them are as a movie piece. So I developed repeated frames with a little movement and then I sewed them in fabric on wood, creating a stripe which reminds me of the cinema." |

'House Beautiful: Bringing the War Home: Red Stripe Kitchen' 1967-1972Keywords: Documentary, Media, Ironic, Images, Connection, War, Vietnam, Home, America, Brightness.
Process: This is collaged together. All of her work in this series is a collection of images from Sears and Life magazine. Time the Work was Created: During the Vietnam War at the height of military engagement. Photomontage from before her time had influenced Rosler greatly (Heartfield WW2 propaganda and Pop Art images by Hamilton. Wider issues adressed bt the work: As an anti-war activist, Rosler was dissatisfied with the anti-war propaganda at the time. She was angry with people who were only worried about themselves rather than the violence that was going on in Vietnam at the time, so she made sure her harder hitting images were being published (often in underground flyers and newspapers). But censorship was imposed on the reportage in Vietnam, this made the public unaware of the situation. Photographers intentions: Rosler intended to show how the media was avoiding directly referring to the connection between the civilian's home lives and the millions of dead soldiers across the world. She also wanted to re-connect two sides of human experiences. The image: Images of homes in the media sell 'the good life', all the home images Rosler uses are from the Sears catalogue and the documentary ones she has taken from 'Life' magazine. |
Landscape - Martha Rosler - Issues Based/Surrealism
Using Photoshop I edited a young girl into the scene of a bar. This is to create a sense of surrealism as two different scenarios combine. I also made sure she was wearing pyjamas (adverse to a dress) and drinking juice (instead of alcohol) to further emphasise the difference.
